 Laboratory
activities usually employ low energy-emitter radionuclides, therefore no
particular shielding device is needed. However, it is necessary to be
equipped with working surfaces that must be wide, comfortable and easy to
decontaminate. In order to reduce any possible contamination, small
basins covered on the bottom with blotting paper can be employed when
handling the radioactive material. Handling operations must be always
carried out wearing gloves.
On the contrary, in the nuclear medicine departments high energy-emitter
radionuclides are employed and, therefore, shielding devices are needed
both for holding the sources and preparing the doses. Furthermore, it is
necessary to be equipped with working surfaces that must be wide,
comfortable and easy to decontaminate and with an appropriate ventilation
system, possibly with fume cupboards and forced aspiration. The
employment of the above mentioned basins is also appropriate. Generally,
the conditions of such services require the personnel (with the exception
of staff involved in marginal functions) to be classified in category
A with dosimetric and health surveillance of the exposed subjects.
