activity is nowadays widespread. As this activity is based on ultraviolet
light action ozone formation from air oxygen occurs, although in very
small quantities. Furthermore products of thermoplastic resin pyrolysis,
of extremely various composition, develop. These make up about 95% of the
toner and of the roller lubricants.
Ozone does not only originate from photocopying machines, but also from
ultraviolet light of confined spaces, electrical equipment involving high
voltages and electrostatic air filters. Ozone can cause acute
irreversible pulmonary changes within a short time and at relatively low
concentrations. Furthermore ozone can increase the bronchial
responsiveness to histamine so that asthmatic subjects can show a
worsening of their clinical condition.
