Shavings furniture

Sawdust furniture employed in offices contains resins that can release appreciable quantities of formaldehyde, an organic compound in the vapour phase.

Mucous membranes irritation due to formaldehyde can be shown in experimental exposure models for concentrations between 0,1 and 0,2 ppm. However, hypersusceptible or formaldehyde immunologically sensitized subjects can react at concentrations below 0,1 ppm. Formaldehyde is also one of the agents suspected to be responsible for the Sick Building Syndrome. It is furthermore suspected to be a pulmonary carcinogen.
