 Both
asbestos and its corresponding synthetical materials have been widely
employed in building, particularly as heat insulators and, in the second
place, as backing materials and as support for other synthetic
manufactured articles. The most widespread and most critical use has been
the employment of sprinkled amianthus as antiflame material and as anti
acoustic reflex for ceilings and for walls in public buildings.
Asbestos fibres can be released inside the buildings following the slow
deterioration of the constituent materials as a result either of direct
damage by occupants or of maintenance interventions. Should asbestos
fibres be released indoors, an increased risk of lung cancer and
mesothelioma exists. Mesothelioma is a malignancy usually related to
asbestos exposure and is otherwise rare in the general population.
