Glutaraldehyde

Colorless to yellow liquid, with a pungent characteristic odour.
Soluble in water generally in alcohol.
Glutaraldehyde is a strongly irritating agent both for the skin and the mucous membranes and has a penetrating smell (olfactory threshold: 0.04 ppm). It is a lightly cutaneous irritant, sensitization phenomenons may occur.
Recent studies seem to exclude mutagenic and cancerogenic effects, but Central Nervous System and teratogenic effects in animals have been described.
Widely used as sporicide, bactericide, virucidal and fungicide in sterilization procedures by immersing medical equipments.
The ceiling fixed by ACGIH is 0.02 ppm, but this can be easily overcome if the sterilization procedure takes place in open containers.
