 The computer
is a set of equipment designed and built to acquire, store, process and
emit data. It is made up of a central unit, to process and store
information, and of several peripheric units that represent the interface
with the user as they are designed to acquire (keyboard, mouse, joystick,
optic pen, scanner) and emit (screen or video, printer, plotter) data.
The term video display terminal generally describes any piece of
equipment with a screen able to reproduce alphanumerical data, graphic
data and images.
When producing images on the screen, the computer generates not only
visible light, but also electromagnetic radiations of different wave
length: X-rays, ultraviolet and infrared radiations, electromagnetic
fields and radiofrequencies. The intensity of such radiations is so weak
that it is hardly measurable or it is just within the reading limits of
the instruments, out of video, as it has been shown by a number of
measurements on instruments that differed in mark, model and maintenance
condition.
A job involving the use of a computer may entail a risk for health in
relation to the duration of the exposure, the job characteristics, the
hardware and software characteristics and the characteristics of the
working environment.
Possible problems include ocular disturbances, musculo-skeletal disorders
and stress reactions.
