 The
characteristics of the equipment and, in particular, of the
videoterminals, the chairs and the lighting systems have been studied for
some time and this has allowed to define standard, regulations and
preventive indications.
These issues have also been addressed in the Title VI of the Italian law
626/94, where it is reported that rooms, worksite and videoterminals must
undergo checks and inspections of some variables, such as those regarding
posture, microclimate, lighting technique and, generally, those regarding
the environment, at regular intervals.
Furthermore, an adequate plan of health surveillance is needed. This
should include the planning of an accurate preventive examination that
can be integrated, when necessary, by an ophthalmic examination expanded
to all functions stressed in this kind of activity. Great importance is
held by corrective indications of existing visual defects made by a
specialist ophthalmologist.
Furthermore, all workers assigned to videoterminals shall undergo health
surveillance at regular intervals, to evaluate any ocular-visual or
general disturbance that might arise as a result of the job with the
videoterminal.
The law 626/94 requires that a risk assessment be made in all worksites
where videoterminals are employed. Furthermore, all subjects employing
them daily for more than 4 continuous hours should undergo health
surveillance with preventive examinations, at least biennial, for those
workers aged more than 45 or those with ascertained ocular-visual
problems.
